Designs | New Zealand | Renewal Requirements
Design registrations from applications filed before 17 June 2004 can only be renewed under the terms of the old Designs Act (Designs Act 2003).The renewal requirements for design registrations are as follows:
- When a design is first registered it is registered for an initial 5 year term commencing from the filing date of the design application.
- A design registration can be renewed for a further 5 year term at any time during the current term of registration providing a maximum possible term of registration of 10 years from the filing date of the design application.
- Renewal fees can be paid up to a maximum of 6 months after they fall due (the renewal grace period) but must be accompanied by an additional monthly late fee for each month, or part of a month after the due date.
- Please note there is a risk associated with late renewals and it is recommended that renewals are paid good time before they fall due.
